Start with a magic ring and always turn your work after each row.

Row 1
Ch 3, 2 dc into the ring. Pull ring closed, cut yarn tail if it’s too long and gets in your way, weave in end. (3 dc)

Row 2
Ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 2, dc in the 3rd ch from previous row. (3 dc, 2 ch)

Row 3
Ch 4 (=1 dc + 1 ch), dc in same stitch, ch 2 and skip 2 ch, dc in dc, dc in the 3rd ch from previous row.
(4 dc, 3 ch)

Row 4
Ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 ch and skip 2 ch, dc, ch and skip ch, *dc, ch, dc* in the 3rd ch from previous row. . (5 dc, 4 ch)

Row 5
Ch 4, dc in the same dc, [ch and skip ch, dc in dc] 2 times. Ch 2 and skip 2 ch, dc in the dc, dc in the 3rd ch from previous row. (6 dc, 5 ch)

Row 6
Ch 3, dc in every dc and chsp until last dc, *3 dc* in last dc. Make sure you do 1 dc for every chain (=2 dc in the large chain space). (13 dc)

Row 7
Ch 4, dc in the same dc, [ch and skip dc, popcorn in next, ch and skip dc, dc in next dc] 3 times. (5 dc, 3 popcorn, 7 ch)

Row 8
Ch 3, dc in every chain space, dc and popcorn until last dc, *3 dc* in last dc. If you want, put a marker on the 4th stitch on this row, counting from where you started. This is your stopping point on the next row. (17 dc)

Row 9
Ch 4, dc in the same dc, [ch and skip dc, dc in the next dc] 4 time (at this point you should have 8 stitches left on your row unworked), ch 2 and skip 2 dc, dc in the next two dc.
This should leave 4 unworked stitches (3 dc and the 3rd ch from previous row, from where you put your marker). This makes up the 1st spike. Now turn before continuing! (8 dc, 7 ch)

Row 10
Ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 ch and skip 2 ch, [dc, ch and skip ch] 5 times, *dc, ch, dc* in the 3rd ch from previous row. (9 dc, 8 ch)

Row 11
Ch 4, dc in the same dc, [ch and skip ch, dc in dc] 6 times, ch 2 and skip 2 ch, dc in dc, dc in the 3rd ch from previous row. (10 dc, 9 ch)

Row 12
Ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 ch and skip 2 ch, [dc, ch and skip ch] 7 times, *dc, ch, dc* in the 3rd ch from previous row. . (11 dc, 10 ch)

Row 13
Ch 4, dc in the same dc, [ch and skip ch, dc] 8 times, ch 2 and skip 2 ch, dc in dc, dc in the 3rd ch from previous row.. (12 dc, 11 ch)

Row 14
Ch 3, dc in every dc and chain space until last dc, *3 dc* in last dc. Make sure you do 1 dc for every chain (=2 dc in the large chain space). . (25 dc)

Row 15
Ch 4, dc in the same dc, [ch and skip dc, popcorn in next, ch and skip dc, dc in next dc] 6 times.. (8 dc, 6 popcorn, 13 ch)

Row 16
Ch 3, dc in every chain space, dc and popcorn until last dc, *3 dc* in last dc. (29 dc)

Now repeat row 9-16 until your shawl is the size you want. Make sure you finish the repeats with row 16 in order to make the edge.

Help on continuing – Row 17

Ch 4, dc in the same dc, [ch and skip dc, dc in the next dc] 10 time, ch 2 and skip 2 dc, dc in the next two dc. This should leave 4 unworked stitches (3 dc and the 3rd ch from previous row) that make up the 2nd spike.         (14 dc, 13 ch)

From here on you’ve gotten the hang of it!

The edge of the shawl

Turn your work as usual after the previous row. The edge is made with slip stitches. Go up a hook size for this row if the edge gets pulled to tight.

Row 1: Skip dc, [sl st in every dc] until end of row. Don’t forget the 3rd ch from previous row!

Finish with a ch, pull tight, cut yarn and pull the loop out until the yarn end follows through your last ch.

Tassel
